In an idyllic rural Japanese village, Takumi and his daughter Hana live a quiet life. Takumi makes a modest living from the surrounding rivers and forests, but is always determined to keep everything pristine. However, that balance is disrupted when a Tokyo company proposes building a ‘glamping’ site for tourists - something Takumi believes will have disastrous consequences for the local environment.
Ryûsuke Hamaguchi follows up the Oscar-winning Drive My Car with this equally accomplished parable about a clash between capitalism, tradition and nature. Brilliantly restrained and often surprising, the film is strengthened by Hamaguchi’s continued collaboration with composer Eiko Ishibashi. Here, the mesmerising score is a central driving force in creating the film’s carefully controlled sense of pace and tone.
“The work of a mature and enormously talented filmmaker not afraid to take chances” - David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
“An absorbing film of quiet power” - Lee Marshall, Screen Daily
