I SWEAR is based on the true story of Scottish activist John Davidson. Teenage John seemed destined to become a professional footballer, until he started developing the symptoms of Tourette’s Syndrome. Years later, a now adult John (played here by Robert Aramayo) is still living with his mother, who is often embarrassed by her son’s tics and involuntary outbursts. However, a chance encounter with an old friend sets John’s life on an exciting new path.
This lively, warm-hearted film is a fascinating portrayal of life with Tourette’s. While the film captures the more challenging sides of John’s experiences, it is ultimately a life-affirming story full of humour and warmth. Rarely has copious swearing been so sweet.
★★★★ “The film feels like a therapeutic tool… I Swear, despite that on-the-nose title, will win friends wherever it goes.” – Donald Clarke, The Irish Times
“Aramayo’s sensitive portrayal of the man and Jones’ unflinching dedication to showing some of Davidson’s most painful moments… add up to an insightful biopic that chronicles a very worthy subject.” – Katie Erbland, Indiewire
