While dealing with the recent death of her estranged mother, Siobhan - who goes by ‘Shoo’ - is offered a new job as a live-in carer for a frail older woman. Despite the objections of her pregnant fiancee Mila, Shoo accepts the offer. She arrives in the rural home to discover a frightened and deeply superstitious woman named Peig. Peig warns that evil spirits lurk nearby - and that they’ve already got their eyes on Shoo.
Aislinn Clarke puts a fresh spin on Irish folk horror with her excellent second feature, which is predominantly shot in Irish language. Cleverly mixing various aspects of Irish history, culture and folklore, this is an eerie and haunting slow-burn chiller.
★★★★ “Fréwaka ambitiously mines Irish mythology and history for socially conscious spookery.” - Tara Brady, The Irish Times
★★★★ “Laced with ambiguity and climaxing with rare control and dread, Clarke hits a bullseye with a folk horror that nods to a modern Ireland haunted by its own past.” - Hilary White, Sunday Independent
“It’s the mythical and political Irish context of “Fréwaka” that makes it stick… [It] twists deep-seated folk imagery into uncanny nightmare fuel.” - Guy Lodge, Variety
