A coming-of-old-age feature following retired cook Ruth, Familiar Touch is a compassionate, inward look at one woman’s transition into assisted living. Mistaking her son for a suitor when he arrives to dine with her one day, Ruth’s ‘date’ takes her to a new home she forgot ever agreeing to live in. Initially lost and adrift, she soon finds warmth in the people around her, grounding her body in new ways as her mind embarks on its own journey.
Sarah Friedland’s debut feature is a remarkable and sensitive film. It is elegant, gentle, and often surprisingly funny, deeply concerned with Ruth’s inner and sensory life. Kathleen Chalfant is simply extraordinary - through her performance, Ruth becomes a fully fleshed out person overflowing with life and personality.
“A still, gentle film about the ravages of time told with uncommon grace and dignity.” - Jarrod Jones, Paste Magazine
“Without straining the importance of any scene, Chalfant puts on a performance master class… There’s not an ounce of spectacle in her turn, yet her work still registers seismically throughout.” - Marshall Shaffer, Slant Magazine
