In 18th century Manchester, a young woman named Ann Lee joins a Quakers sect known for their acts of ecstatic dance and ‘shaking’ during worship. After experiencing several family tragedies, Ann undergoes a deeper religious conversion and is convinced celibacy is the path forward. The ‘Shakers’ unite around Ann as a potential Messiah, but face persecution from local authorities - eventually driving ‘Mother Ann’ and a small group of followers to seek sanctuary and new acolytes in America.

Inspired by the true story of Shakers leader Ann Lee, Mona Fastvold’s film explores the many complexities of faith in a captivating film full of rapturous dance and music. Amanda Seyfried delivers an astonishing performance in a physically and emotionally demanding role.
