“The beauty of a thing is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together” – Carl Sagan

Working from themes explored in the exhibition Of Peras and Apeiron, this workshop invites students to thoughtfully explore both the boundaries and boundless potential of one of some of geometry’s most basic shapes. Using Lego and traditional print-making, this workshop reveals an extraordinary capacity for complexity and artistic expression within a finite system.

Under the guidance of visual artist Andrew Carson, students will explore the transformation of individual brick units into more complex and pixelated images, crafting individual geometric images inspired by the union of art and maths; each piece, a boundless expression of the boundless system.

Linking to components within Content Area 3 - Today’s World of the Visual Studies Curriculum, students will develop creative, pictorial responses that explore numerical, geometrical and methodical art making systems, using approaches that are mathematical and rational, fictional and personal.

This workshop is suitable for all post-primary class groups.

Andrew Carson is an artist, maker, and educator whose practice centre’s on exploring human connections through the lens of digital technology. His work investigates how social structures, systems, and communication methods are shaped by—and in turn shape—the use of digital devices and social media as our most common forms of contact.

Carson repeatedly returns to questions such as: How can we reconcile virtual and physical realities? Can we bridge the psychological distance inherent in digital interaction? His work is often installation-based, created in response to and in dialogue with specific spaces. As both a maker and educator, he engages with diverse materials and processes, including digital sound and image, printmaking, photography and paper engineering.
